John Smolic

John F. Smolic, 85, passed away January 31, 2018 at his home in Zelienople, PA surrounded by his family. He was born on August 13, 1932 in Sheboygan to John and Mary (Saje`) Smolic. John attended Ss. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Grade School and graduated from Central High School with the class of 1951. John went on to attend Milwaukee School of Engineering, graduating with an Associate Degree in Applied Science in Radio and Television Technology. He then served in the US Army from1955 to 1957 and in the Signal Core National Guard until 1959.
John worked in the family business, Somlic's Tavern and Grocery, after leaving the Army. On August 11, 1962 he was united in marriage to the love of his life Cecilia Rose Binversie at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in School Hill. John returned to school, obtaining a BA in secondary teaching, and taught math and economics at Farnsworth and Horace Mann junior High Schools until 1979. John continued to own and operate Smolic's Tavern until his retirement in 2002.
John was a member of Slovenian Union America Branch 1, and a member of Ss. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church. John and Cecilia moved to Zelienople, PA in 2013 to be closer to their son and family.
John is survived by his wife Cecilia, a son John L. (Beth) Somlic, grandchildren; Samantha, John W., and Sydney, brother and sisters-in-law; Dominic Binversie, Agnes Wiltzius, Betty (Ken) Biese, Walter Scharrer, and Joan Nigles, his aunt Christine (in Slovenia), and many cousins in the uNited States, Slovenia, Canada, and Sweden, and many nieces and nephews in the United States.
John was preceded in death by his parents and sister Mary Josephine Smolic.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at 12:00 Noon at Ss. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church, 822 New Jersey Ave., Sheboygan, with Fr. Richard Cerpich officiating. Military Honors will follow the Mass. Inurnment will take place at Greendale Cemetery. Relatives and friends may visit with the family on Saturday, April 7, 2018 from 10:00 AM until the time of Mass at the CHURCH.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Ss. Cyril and Methodius Church: 1439 W. 12th Street Sheboygan 53081, in John's name.
